Beginner Glass Blowing Program – 2019 Fall session is open for registration

Have you taken one of our guided classes and want a deeper understanding of creating in glass?

Want to know what it’s like to handle the tools yourself?

We often hear that students would like to take a deeper dive into glass blowing; this program is designed for busy people, one 4 hour instructional session per month followed by a 3 hour group practice session. Each session will review and then build on the skills covered in the last.  Practice sessions are a key component to learning the skills.  With completion of this program you will have experienced all the basic techniques required to create both blown and solid pieces in hot glass.  You will be eligible subject to availability  to rent time in our studio.

Session 1 Hot Glass This class will introduce you to the fundamentals of hot glass; Working in clear glass, you will learn hot shop safety, how to gather from the furnace and basic tool use through demonstrations and hands-on exercises. Follow this class with a practice session to reinforce the skills you learn. Prerequisite; Students must have taken at least one Hot Glass class at Stone and Glass.    

Session 2 the Bubble This class will reinforce safety, tool use, how to gather, and form and control glass and introduce blowing the bubble in clear glass.  With these basic skills you will learn to create a drinking glass, small vase or bowl. Follow this class with a practice session to reinforce the skills you learn. Prerequisite; Students must have taken Hot Glass for Beginners

Session 3 Thermodynamics of Color This class will reinforce safety, tool use, how to gather, and form and control glass, starting and caring for your bubble and introduce color.  We will explore how to apply color, how they behave when heated combined.  We will introduce new tools to create special effects. Follow this class with a practice session to reinforce the skills you learn. Prerequisite; Students must have taken the Bubble

Session 4 Bits and Wraps This class will review safety, tool use, how to gather, form and control, caring for your bubble and introduce bits and wraps.  We will learn how to prepare a bit for a specific use, color application, shape, heat, application and manipulation. Follow this class with a practice session to reinforce the skills you learn. Prerequisite; Students must have taken Thermodynamics of Color for Beginners

Practice time for Beginners, practice is a key to success in glass blowing 3 hours practice time for students taking the Beginner Sessions.  Join other beginning students to practice the skills you are learning. This time is supervised for student safety not instructed, you may use studio tools during the session, and shared annealing space is available.

  • Classes are held on Saturday morning
  • Practice sessions the following Saturday
  • Minimum 2 students, maximum 4 in each class and practice session.
  • All tools and materials are provided.
  • Safety glasses and sleeves are available for your use and available for purchase.
  • Total for the course is $1200.  A 25% deposit is required to hold your space.
  • Balance is due in progress payments once the workshop begins.
